First it was the telephones, then came photography, and now it is the home entertainment industry. What these three have in common?
They have all been affected by analog technology becoming a thing of the past. Today everything is going digital, and there is no reason to mourn the demise of analog - digital is indeed a great improvement in many aspects.
Your Problem
Pity only that over the years you invested a lot into your private video library. You taped your favourite programs from TV, you bought original movies on video, maybe you even had your wedding video-taped at great expense. But lately you have only been watching DVDs and you marvelled at their outstanding quality in picture clarity and sound. - And you probably wished there was a way to have all your favourite videos on DVD as well.
The Solution
Well, you found the good news right here!
You can have your videos converted into DVDs.
onDVD specializes in just that. Simply bring or snail-mail your videotapes to us and have them digitalized (or, if you prefer the American term, "digitized") and written to a DVD or CD. Now you can watch them on your DVD player or even on your PC!
Quality
Normally, a video copied on to DVD will not quite reach the quality of an officially distributed DVD bought from a shop. This is simply because it has not been recorded in digital format in the first place. However, it will definitely benefit from the conversion and not be worse than your original videotape - our state of the art technology makes sure of a pleasant surprise for you.
Benefits
Videotapes lose quality continuously - they "fade" as time goes by. This unfortunate process is often aggravated by improper storage. DVDs, in contrast, don't age, are not susceptible to magnetic fields, and can, under normal circumstances, not be "worn out". The only things they do not tolerate is heat and severe scratching. They are, therefore, a very safe preservation medium for whatever is valuable to you.
Editing
If you want to have certain sequences on your videotape eliminated, we can do that for you as well, at a time-related cost. This would make sense, for example, if it is a movie recorded from a TV channel including all the annoying ad breaks. We may also try to "restore" some of the quality of your tapes, but this is a very time-intensive manual process and therefore fairly costly. Discuss it with us before you make a decision.
Format
The videotape to be copied from must be VHS, Video-12 or Video-8 in cassette format, but may have been recorded in any of the common TV formats, i.e. PAL, SECAM, or NTSC.
We cannot convert from BetaMax, Video 2000, or any of the reeled film formats (8, 16, 35 mm).
The converted DVD will routinely be in DVD-R format which all modern DVD players and DVD ROMs support. Conversion/copying into other common formats can be done on request. If you, for any reason, require copying on CD or a separate harddrive, we offer this service, too.
Other Conversions
Audio Cassette Tapes
What has been said above about video tapes becoming outdated, applies even more to casette tapes. Gone are the times when every car was fitted with a cassette player. Today it's CD players everywhere.
If you want to hang on to your favourite tapes, we can turn them into CD player compatible CDs for you - no problem!
It also doesn't matter to us whether it is music, speech, sermons, or whale songs.
The only limiting factor is that a fully compatible CD takes a maximum of 80 minutes of audio material.
If you want your custom CD to only play back on your computer with Windows Media Player, we can fit about 4,5 hours on one CD. A later conversion of this file format to CD Player-compatible can be done easily.
The quality of such a CD corresponds with the quality of the original tape (actually, it is slightly better).
We can also convert your analog audio material into MP3 format. Of course, it will only play back on an MP3-player or PC. Because a CD can take a large number of MP3 files (songs), the respective tariff is calculated on the basis of playing time rather than CDs used.
Vinyl Records
Remember those large black frisbies? We can turn them into small iridescent frisbies for you.
Note, however, that the outcome will not necessarily compare with a digitally remastered CD from the shops. It will much rather be a true copy of your record, scratches and all. We can convert 33 ("LP") or 45 rpm ("Single") records, and even the old mono 78 rpm ("shellack") ones.
The capacity of a CD is also in this case limited to a maximum of 80 minutes of sound for CD Player-compatible and about 4,5 hours for playback with Windows Media Player. MP3 format is at present unavailable.
Photo Albums
You can also have your print photographs turned into slide shows on DVD or CD to be watched on your TV screen or your PC. You can choose from all the common picture formats, such as TIFF, JPEG, BMP etc.
We will soon be able to also convert slides and reverse-colour negatives into digital photo collections on DVD/CD. Watch this website for the announcement or enquire by e-mail.
Confidentiality
Your privacy is fully ensured. Your personal data will be kept strictly confidential as will the contents of your tapes/DVDs. We won't even watch your tapes ourselves during ordinary copying, simply because we don't have time for that. If you wish us to edit a tape, we will, of course, have to look at it.
In the case of company documents we will readily sign a confidentiality agreement that provides our clients with a legally binding assurance that none of their data will leak out to anybody while in our care. Accidental "leakage" through Internet hackers is impossible as our machinery is set up as an "island system" that is not connected to the Net. We will also not store copies of their documents because, for us, harddrive space is precious!
Copyright
onDVD adheres strictly to the existing copyright laws and will not engage in the illegal multiplication of copyrighted material. While the conversion into another storage format (DVD/CD) of your own video/audio material for your personal use is within these laws, the mass duplication of one such source clearly is not. If you own the copyright of a certain source material (e.g., a wedding tape), we may of course do the mass-copying for you. To ensure our legal position all clients will have to sign a respective copyright indemnity on placing of an order.

Reservations
We reserve the right of rejecting a conversion job in cases where a client's filmographic material contravenes the laws of the Republic of South Africa. Specifically, we want nothing to do with child pornography, the propagation of terrorism, and cruelty to animals in any form.
We do not accept unprofessionally "patched-up" videotapes or those with cracked or otherwise damaged casings.
Guarantee
Our work is guaranteed, and no DVD or CD leaves our premises without having been spot-checked before. If you find fault with a DVD or CD you may return it within 7 (seven) days from the date you have been notified that your job is ready for collection for a free redo (in such case please phone the office number given below). For the possibility of this, however unlikely, we will keep a copy of the client's material on a harddrive for this period of time, after which it will be deleted permanently. This guarantee refers to mechanical damage and/or faulty manufacturing of the data carrier (DVD, CD) only. Explicitly excluded from this guarantee are cases where the original material is of poor quality and subjective disappointment is then experienced by the client upon receipt of the converted/copied material. All clients' materials are treated with utmost care while at our premises, but no responsibility can be assumed for inappropriate handling by postal services.
Range of Operation
Operating out of Gauteng, we service South Africa nation-wide, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho. If you are interested in making use of our services, but you are situated in a country not listed here, please contact us.
